A first-timer's guide to Finnish sauna etiquette
Shower first, sit on a towel, don't rush — everything you need to know before your first löyly.
Finland has more saunas than cars — roughly three million for 5.5 million people. Here is how to do it like a local.
Before you go in
Shower thoroughly. In public saunas this is not optional. Bring a small towel or paper seat cover to sit on.
Löyly
Löyly is the steam that rises when water hits the hot stones. Ask before throwing more — 'Saako heittää löylyä?' works wonders.
Cool down
Alternate between heat and cold: a sea dip, a cold shower or just sitting outside. Repeat two or three times.
Talk, or don't
Sauna is a place of calm. Small talk is fine, phones are not.
